Triad Trip
May 30 & 31
Mark your
calendars and pack your bag! This spring, the Andrew Johnson Heritage
Association is sponsoring a personally guided tour of the homes of our three
Tennessee presidents: Johnson, Jackson and Polk. We are extremely fortunate to
have the very knowledgeable and personable professor
emeritus of History at Tusculum College, Dr. Donal Sexton, as our guide for
these two days, May 30 and 31st.
On Friday
morning, May 30, we will meet at the Doak House parking lot where you may
safely leave your vehicle. Our trip will take us first to the National Park
Service Visitor’s Center in Greeneville. After viewing the introductory film
and seeing the Tailor Shop, we will visit the homes of Andrew Johnson for an
up-close and personal look at sites that shaped much of the life of our 17th
president.
From
Greeneville, we will leave for Nashville on a comfortable Greene Coach 31 passenger mini- coach. The bus has reclining
seats, is climate controlled, and is video, P/A and stereo equipped. On the
way, we’ll stop in Morristown for lunch at the Cracker Barrel restaurant before
resuming our trip.
In Nashville, after dinner at a restaurant of your choosing,
we will spend the night in a Hampton Inn (breakfast provided) before visiting
the Hermitage, home of Old Hickory, Andrew Jackson. We will tour the mansion, visit the gift shop,
and lunch at The Garden Gate Café on the premises.
Afternoon will find us in Columbia at the home of James K.
Polk, our 11th president. This is the
only remaining residence of Polk with the exception of the White House. The ca.
1816 home was built by Polk’s father Samuel, and is one of the best examples of
Federal style architecture remaining in Tennessee. We will return to
Greeneville Saturday evening after touring the Polk home.
The cost of $220 per person or
$340 per couple (based on double occupancy motel room) for this personally
guided tour includes transportation, overnight accommodations, and entrance
fees to attractions.Meals, with the
exception of breakfast Saturday, are not included. This price includes a one year membership in the Andrew
Johnson Heritage Association.
We need to have a full bus, or 31 people, to meet expenses. Please join
us and encourage your friends to join us for this adventure. If this is a
success, we expect to plan other exciting travel opportunities in the future.
PLEASE: It is vital that we know whether or not you are interested in making
this trip so that we can make a deposit with the bus company to hold the dates.
If you are seriously interested, please call 423.636.7372 (w) or email me at jdoughty@tusculum.eduas soon as possible.
This trip is a first for the
AJHA. We want to provide members with interesting and unique events and
opportunities that entertain and enrich your lives. Please give us your
feedback and suggestions.
